Writer

We’re Red Thread Games, the studio behind Dreamfall Chapters and Draugen, and we’re looking for a writer for Dustborn: a narrative-driven, third person action-adventure for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

Because of the game’s setting and themes, we are primarily looking for candidates based in the United States, preferably candidates who reflect the diversity of our cast. We strongly encourage women of colour to apply for this position. This is a remote position.

As a writer on the team, you’ll join the writers room to work on story and plot, narrative design and missions with the lead writer and design team, script character dialogue and in-game text using our in-house tool, and deliver the text needed to support the content and game systems.

This position does not require professional game development experience, but you must have a comprehensive portfolio with examples of character dialogue and descriptive text, a genuine interest in video games and game writing, and preferably experience from either triple-A or indie game development, or game jams, hobby or student projects.

You may be required to take a paid writing test.

Job description

If hired, you’ll work on Dustborn, a 3D adventure that blends narrative with action in an original and exciting setting. The game is in development for PC and next-generation consoles, and made with the Unity engine.

You’ll report directly to the lead writer, and collaborate with a team of designers, programmers and artists. Your role will touch on many different areas of development, and requires at least a basic understanding of game development and design processes, user interfaces and experiences, game systems and mechanics.

Red Thread uses an in-house tool to write and script branching dialogues, and you’ll be expected to learn and master this tool.

This is a remote contract position, starting as soon as possible and lasting until the end of the project.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction from the lead writer, you’ll produce dialogue and text for the game using our in-house narrative tool

  • Collaborate with the design team, artists, animators and programmers to deliver any text needed to support the content and game systems

  • Partake in the writers room, in addition to regular design meetings and brainstorming sessions

  • Work independently and efficiently to ensure your tasks are delivered on time and to a high quality

Qualifications

  • A comprehensive portfolio that shows your full range and skillsets, with examples of character dialogues and descriptive text and prose

  • Ideally, you’ll have worked on at least one playable game in a writing or narrative design role: this can be a mod, a hobby or student project, or a commercially available title that we can play. Please include both a download link and a video with game footage

  • Excellent grasp of the English language — preferably American English — written and spoken

  • A deep and native-level understanding of American culture and media, politics, geography and history

  • A passion for interactive storytelling, RPGs, visual novels, adventure games and action-adventure games. If you’ve played our previous games, that’s a bonus!

  • Multidisciplinary, agile, curious and eager to learn: prior experience with Unity is a plus but not a must
